Reflections on 2017, and my best of beauty products!

Happy New Year!  Welcome from the frozen tundra that is the upper Midwest!

My reflections will be brief as 2017 was not the best year for me.  I lost a job I had hoped to retire from, and had two knee surgeries on the same leg.  I want nothing more than to put 2017 behind me. 2017 wasn’t all bad, we went on a fun vacation to New Orleans, and our child graduated from high school.  My husband and child are happy and healthy, and that’s the best I can hope for.

I haven’t done as many product reviews this year because I have cut back on my spending.  The products that were my favorites in 2017 were mostly make up, with some great hygiene products thrown in.

Let’s get started.  Clairol Root Touch up $8 USD.  This is such a great product.  I use to spend so much money having my hair professionally colored. I would get partial highlights and walk out of the salon over $150 poorer (with a generous tip).  My hair looked okay having it professionally done, but it wasn’t like anyone ever noticed or complimented me on my hair color.  I wear my hair up 80% of the time, and I’m only coloring it every six weeks, just the touch up, I might do my whole head once a year.

My perfect shade!

Dove Dry Spray invisible 48 hr antiperspirant.  $6 USD.  I used a solid stick for years.  This product is pricey but leaves no white marks on your clothing.  The fact that’s its 48 hour is weird, but whatever.

No white residue!

Having had two surgeries this year, this Drybar Detox Dry shampoo came in very handy.  It’s pricey at $23 USD, but so worth it.

Great scent!

Pantene Air Spray with no alcohol $5 USD.  This is a great product, my hair is dry and being alcohol free makes this my go to hair spray.  I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price as I’m a big coupon shopper.

Who doesn’t want whiter teeth?  I found this Dazzling White whitening pen at Dollar Tree for $1 USD.  I have a lot of crowns, so this works really well for me. I’ve seen these at WalMart for $5 USD.  You can find some great beauty buys at the dollar store.

L’Oreal Age Perfect Eye Balm $20 USD.  2017 has taken a toll on my poor face.  This helps great with under eye circles and wrinkles.

Touch’N Brow eyebrow shapers $1.79 USD at a beauty supply store in the inner city.  Menopause  and 2017 have not been kind to my face, between hair sprouting out of my nose and covering my face, I would be a mess without these puppies. Shaving your face is also a great exfoliant.  I paid $5 USD at Sally Beauty for the same product.

Last but not least L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara $10 USD.  This has been a game changer for me.  I wear glasses, and this mascara really makes your lashes stand out.  I use blackest-brown.  It’s easy to remove, and I haven’t paid full price for it yet. I have 6 tubes stashed for the next year or so.

Thank you so much for stopping by, and I hope everyone has a great 2018!

The Art of Falling Down

https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2017/how-to-fall-safely.html

This is a great article for baby boomers.  I’m a klutz, and have fallen down more times than I care to count.  My most recent spill was while on vacation.  I was taking a photo and fell backwards over a curb.  Thank goodness some bushes broke my fall.

I am currently recovering from knee replacement surgery.  It’s winter here in Wisconsin and I’m deathly afraid of taking another tumble while trying to walk with a cane.

Fortunately for me, I do know how to fall.  When I was a kid, I was always fighting with my two older brothers.  They use to chase me around the house, and outside I would always be tripping on something.  I learned how to tuck and roll.  I never really got hurt except for a few scrapes here and there.

Just last week we had our first snowfall, and my car windows were ice covered. I worked late and had to scrape my car off.  The parking lot was empty, and I was thinking “crappity crap crap, if I fall down, who is going to help me?”

As you get older though, falling down is no joke. I am forever looking down when I walk.   It’s really important to watch where you are going when traveling in a foreign country.  I have found out the hard way that other countries do not have the same construction standards we have in the United States.

I think it’s important to not be carrying so many things at once. I carry a purse and lately a backpack when I go to work.  I constantly see people looking at their phones when they go anywhere, and looking down.  Is someone texting you or whatever more important than your safety? I do wonder sometimes.

Hitting one’s head as you get older can lead to serious problems. Lucky for me when I wiped out on vacation, I was wearing a wig and a hat, and they both protected my head when I fell.

Be safe out there my friends.

The superficiality of social media

Seems like a bit of an oxymoron to me.  While I do have a blog, I don’t post every minute action of my life to social media.  I’m old school (or just old according to my teenage son) whereas I have a Facebook account.

Why do people feel the need to share everything on social media? Is it the need to be validated by others? I’ve connected with many old friends on Facebook, which is great, but you won’t see what I made for dinner the night before. I recently saw a photo of a Facebook friend’s minor child, bloodied in the ER.  His first stitches she gasped. The kid looked mortified.

Another post was a friend who went on TV without having eyebrow make up on.  People commenting that she was so brave, WTF! Granted she was on an infomercial program for her cosmetic studio, but brave for going out without her eyebrows on?? Brave is someone who runs into a burning building and rescues people or pets.

What about the person who posts 50 plus photos of their child’s birthday, first tooth, etc.  Or the people who post cryptic messages, begging people to ask them why they are sad, mad, fat, etc.?? Why do people feel the need to put so much of their lives out there for the whole world to see?  Does anyone really care? I know I don’t. I have a distant relative who once posted 500 photos of her kid’s sporting event.

When did we as a society become so completely self-absorbed? While I may take photos of my food when I dine out, it’s because I write reviews for TripAdvisor, Google, etc.  What happened to living in the moment instead of photographing the crap out of it and posting it all on social media?

I recently attended a function called China Lights.  It was Chinese sculptures entirely made of silk that had lights on the inside.  It would have been so much better if every person in front of us didn’t have to stop and take endless selfies. I could see one or two, but every flipping sculpture had a multitude of knuckleheads taking a crap ton of photos. I went last year and took some photos, but it wasn’t very crowded, and I made sure I wasn’t in anyone’s way.

I’m always amazed when I see some viral video where something terrible is happening to someone, and people stand around filming it.  What happened to being a decent human being and helping the person instead? What a concept!

I wish more people would be more involved in helping others than documenting every mundane aspect of their lives on social media.  I have more respect for the unassuming person who helps others, not the braggarts who feel you need to see what they had for breakfast.
