Reflections on 2017, and my best of beauty products!

Happy New Year!  Welcome from the frozen tundra that is the upper Midwest!

My reflections will be brief as 2017 was not the best year for me.  I lost a job I had hoped to retire from, and had two knee surgeries on the same leg.  I want nothing more than to put 2017 behind me. 2017 wasn’t all bad, we went on a fun vacation to New Orleans, and our child graduated from high school.  My husband and child are happy and healthy, and that’s the best I can hope for.

I haven’t done as many product reviews this year because I have cut back on my spending.  The products that were my favorites in 2017 were mostly make up, with some great hygiene products thrown in.

Let’s get started.  Clairol Root Touch up $8 USD.  This is such a great product.  I use to spend so much money having my hair professionally colored. I would get partial highlights and walk out of the salon over $150 poorer (with a generous tip).  My hair looked okay having it professionally done, but it wasn’t like anyone ever noticed or complimented me on my hair color.  I wear my hair up 80% of the time, and I’m only coloring it every six weeks, just the touch up, I might do my whole head once a year.

My perfect shade!

Dove Dry Spray invisible 48 hr antiperspirant.  $6 USD.  I used a solid stick for years.  This product is pricey but leaves no white marks on your clothing.  The fact that’s its 48 hour is weird, but whatever.

No white residue!

Having had two surgeries this year, this Drybar Detox Dry shampoo came in very handy.  It’s pricey at $23 USD, but so worth it.

Great scent!

Pantene Air Spray with no alcohol $5 USD.  This is a great product, my hair is dry and being alcohol free makes this my go to hair spray.  I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price as I’m a big coupon shopper.

Who doesn’t want whiter teeth?  I found this Dazzling White whitening pen at Dollar Tree for $1 USD.  I have a lot of crowns, so this works really well for me. I’ve seen these at WalMart for $5 USD.  You can find some great beauty buys at the dollar store.

L’Oreal Age Perfect Eye Balm $20 USD.  2017 has taken a toll on my poor face.  This helps great with under eye circles and wrinkles.

Touch’N Brow eyebrow shapers $1.79 USD at a beauty supply store in the inner city.  Menopause  and 2017 have not been kind to my face, between hair sprouting out of my nose and covering my face, I would be a mess without these puppies. Shaving your face is also a great exfoliant.  I paid $5 USD at Sally Beauty for the same product.

Last but not least L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara $10 USD.  This has been a game changer for me.  I wear glasses, and this mascara really makes your lashes stand out.  I use blackest-brown.  It’s easy to remove, and I haven’t paid full price for it yet. I have 6 tubes stashed for the next year or so.

Thank you so much for stopping by, and I hope everyone has a great 2018!

I thought of you today……..

I can’t believe it’s been fifteen years.  December 29, 2002 to be exact. Fifteen years ago today, my dear sister in-law Joanne was killed by a drunk driver.  Joanne was an ER nurse on her way to work when she was cruelly taken away by a drunk driver at 6 o’clock in the morning.  I had spoken to her briefly on Christmas day, she was busy and I knew I could catch up with her later.  Later never came.

Nothing is more jolting than the phone ringing at 7 am, especially when your family lives out of state.  My mother called me to tell me the terrible news about Joanne.  She had been killed in a car accident. I could barely breathe, Joanne and I were very close. She had been a part of my family for 17 years.  I remember when I first met Joanne.  I told my brother you had better not let this woman get away.  Seven years later she became my sister in-law.  She left behind two young children, along with my brother and many friends and family.

Joanne had moved back to the small town she grew up in to be closer to her widowed mother.  She built an addition on her childhood home so she could help care for her.  Family was everything to Joanne.  She wanted her children to have the same kind of childhood she had, growing up in a small town and being actively involved in the children’s school and church.  She worked weekends at the hospital so she could spend more time with her kids during the week.

Joanne would give you the shirt off her back.  She was always thinking of others.  The day she died, she had volunteered to take another person’s shift at the hospital.  We had planned a trip with her family and mine to Mexico the following year. Growing up without any cousins, I was excited at the prospect of both of our families going on vacation together, and our children getting to know each other.  We lived in different states but talked often on the phone.  The last time I saw Joanne was the Summer of 2002.  We went on a family trip and had a grand time.  I was so looking forward to our Mexico trip.

Over the years I had my niece and nephew come and spend time with us in Wisconsin.  I will always treasure those times.  I’ve always tried to do right by my niece and nephew, because I know had the situation been reversed, Joanne would have done the same for me.

Joanne’s children are grown now and I know she would be so proud of them.  She has a beautiful granddaughter as well. I think about her often and wonder what her life could have been.  She accomplished a great deal during her short time here on earth.  She was an organ donor, and her death benefited over 200 people. I didn’t even know that was possible.  She help found the Center of Hope at the hospital where she worked which offers aid to victims of sexual assault.

Making the five hour trip for the funeral was a very difficult time for us.  We last saw Joanne six months earlier when they came to visit us.  Pulling up to the funeral home was surreal.  There was a line of people out the door and around the building, waiting to pay their respects to this vibrant, caring person.  I think I counted at least four people who said Joanne was their best friend. She always listened and never had harsh words for anyone.

I’m not a religious person, but when I hear people say “what would Jesus do?”, I say  “what would Joanne do.”

You are forever in my heart Joanne. I miss you so much.

The Art of Falling Down

https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2017/how-to-fall-safely.html

This is a great article for baby boomers.  I’m a klutz, and have fallen down more times than I care to count.  My most recent spill was while on vacation.  I was taking a photo and fell backwards over a curb.  Thank goodness some bushes broke my fall.

I am currently recovering from knee replacement surgery.  It’s winter here in Wisconsin and I’m deathly afraid of taking another tumble while trying to walk with a cane.

Fortunately for me, I do know how to fall.  When I was a kid, I was always fighting with my two older brothers.  They use to chase me around the house, and outside I would always be tripping on something.  I learned how to tuck and roll.  I never really got hurt except for a few scrapes here and there.

Just last week we had our first snowfall, and my car windows were ice covered. I worked late and had to scrape my car off.  The parking lot was empty, and I was thinking “crappity crap crap, if I fall down, who is going to help me?”

As you get older though, falling down is no joke. I am forever looking down when I walk.   It’s really important to watch where you are going when traveling in a foreign country.  I have found out the hard way that other countries do not have the same construction standards we have in the United States.

I think it’s important to not be carrying so many things at once. I carry a purse and lately a backpack when I go to work.  I constantly see people looking at their phones when they go anywhere, and looking down.  Is someone texting you or whatever more important than your safety? I do wonder sometimes.

Hitting one’s head as you get older can lead to serious problems. Lucky for me when I wiped out on vacation, I was wearing a wig and a hat, and they both protected my head when I fell.

Be safe out there my friends.

It’s up to you, the younger generation!

As a former Republican, now Independent voter, it is very hard to defend what my former party stands for. What used to be a party that boasted fiscal stewardship with a little heart, now is fiscally narrow-minded and mean-spirited. There are three major themes that have emerged during the Trump version of this party, all […]

Why can’t we all just get along!

It would not be a surprise to know that the US Congress and White House are highly dysfunctional. They have long ago forgotten why they are there. It seems opinions of the donors and oligarchy are the only ones that matter. We need to make our voice louder and consistent. Irrespective of any party affiliation, […]

Dear Republicans, You’re Dealing With The Devil By Supporting Judge Moore For The US Senate

American Republicans , the party of Pedophiles!

Gronda Morin

In response to mass shootings,Congress will never offer more than "thoughts and prayers" as long as it's beholden to contributions from the gun lobby.

Dear Republicans supporting the election of Judge Roy Moore of Alabama for the US Senate seat  on December 12, 2017, you need to do some real soul searching.

The Republican National Committee has decided to back Judge Roy Moore’s election again after previously having withdrawn its support. It is proof that their having a republican in the US senate is more important than their knowingly backing an alleged pedophile (in his early 30s when he was a local district attorney) with credible reporting from numerous women who have come forward; mall personnel who recalled having security escort him out of the premises as he had a penchant for hitting on high school girls, and a co-worker deputy district attorney who states that Judge Moore’s penchant for dating very young girls was an open local secret in GADSDEN , Alabama.

Dear Republicans, here is a James Baldwin quote that you need…

Here’s hoping we don’t gain a bunch of holiday weight!

As we enter this final month of the year, we also enter the season of eating, drinking and holiday parties. A study done through Cornell University discovered that people gain, on average, around 13 pounds over the holiday season, beginning in October/November and peaking at Christmas. (6) They also discovered that, while half of the […]
